Release Day Marketing Checklist for Independent Artists

Release day is the convergence of weeks of preparation. Most independent artists know they should promote their release, but without a systematic checklist, important actions get missed in the chaos. This checklist covers everything from 7 days before release to 48 hours after.

1. 7 days before release: Prepare your assets

Create your Lynkify smart link with all streaming URLs (pre-populate with any platform links already available, add others as they go live). Verify your smart link page looks correct on mobile and desktop. Upload the release artwork and confirm it pulls in correctly. Write your email announcement copy. Draft your social media captions for release day. Set up your Meta Pixel or TikTok Pixel on the smart link if you plan to run ads.

2. 5 days before release: Start promotion and pre-save

Begin teasing the release on social media. Share a clip, a lyric, or behind-the-scenes content. Post your smart link in pre-save mode or with pre-save links if your distributor supports it. Send a pre-release email to your fan list with the smart link — early fans can save or presave. Monitor your smart link analytics to confirm traffic is routing correctly.

3. Release day: Execute the full push

Announce across all social platforms simultaneously (or within the same hour). Update your Instagram and TikTok bio link to point to the new release smart link. Send your release announcement email to your full fan list. Reply to comments and DMs personally for the first few hours — early engagement signals matter to algorithms. Submit your track to Spotify for Artists playlist consideration if you have not already (must be done pre-release but confirm the submission is active).

4. 48 hours after release: Analyze and amplify

Open your Lynkify Analytics dashboard. Check: which streaming platforms fans prefer, which traffic sources drove the most clicks, what your fan email capture rate was, and which countries your fans are coming from. Use this data to inform your next social posts — if 40% of your fans are on Apple Music, post content specifically mentioning Apple Music. Follow up with fans who signed up during the release campaign with a personal welcome email.

5. 1 week after release: Sustain the momentum

Most independent artist promotion dies within 48 hours of release. You have now done the hard part — do not abandon it. Post second-wave content: a music video, a live performance clip, a behind-the-scenes production video, or fan reactions. Send a follow-up email to your list with streaming stats or a thank-you. Continue engaging with playlist curators and press outlets that cover your genre.

Frequently asked questions

When should I create my smart link before a release?
Create your Lynkify smart link 7-14 days before release. This gives you time to verify all streaming URLs are correct, set up fan capture, test the page on mobile, and start driving pre-save traffic before the release date.
How many times should I post about my release on social media?
Most independent artists dramatically under-post during a release cycle. A minimum of 8-12 posts across all platforms in the week before and after release is a reasonable baseline. Remember that only 2-5% of your followers see any given post, so repetition is not as redundant as it feels.
